Luis Enrique Says Barcelona Never Stopped Believing against PSG

Luis Enrique says that Barcelona never stopped believing that they would be able to get past Paris St Germain in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

The Catalan club suffered a 4-0 loss in the first leg. The second leg was at the Camp Nou, not many gave the Spanish table leaders a chance given that no club in the Champions League history has been able to overturn such a huge first leg deficit. Barcelona were on the verge of going out of the competition in the last 16 stage for the first time since 2007. However, they produced one of the greatest comebacks – not just in football – to secure a 6-5 aggregate victory over the French club.

Three goals in the last seven minutes were crucial, as PSG looked like being capable of holding on to the slender advantage with only 10 minutes of normal time remaining. However, a late, late goal from Sergi Roberto made it almost impossible for PSG to believe that they were going out of the competition after having won 4-0 in the first leg. Manager Luis Enrique says that belief from the team was a major factor behind Barcelona managing this incredible comeback. The club’s fortunes have reversed in the last few weeks as a result of this win. Barca now have a lead in the Spanish La Liga to protect too.

“I was brought to my knees. I would like to thank everyone who kept their faith after we lost 4-0. This is dedicated to them because this isn’t the Harlem Globetrotters, this is football. I don’t think anyone stopped believing. After seeing them sit back despite the goal, the team were incredible. We risked everything and it paid off. You get finales like this very occasionally in football and this time it was our turn,” said Luis Enrique.
